I always say it’s your business & you can make it anything you want, and have built my own businesses by following that guidepost.
My entrepreneurial journey has run the gamut of personal life stages.
I started my first business in 1990 at 29. I had 2 babies, my husband was retiring from the Navy, and my father-in-law was moving in with us due to Alzheimer’s. Crazy times! Sometimes I look back on it & don’t know how I did it without losing my mind (or maybe I did lose it & just don’t know it lol).
32 years later I’ve owned several businesses, selling all but the web & business strategy company I started in ’96 & still own. Leading up to now:
- we cared for my father-in-law in our home for 8+ years,
- the kids are grown and on their own,
- I sold a dot-com just before the bubble burst,
- I’ve written 4 books & spoken throughout the country,
- have served on numerous boards,
- traveled between Florida & Virginia helping my father when he had leukemia,
- moved back to Virginia to be near my mother,
- spent 4 years living with & caring for her during Alzheimer’s until her death, and
- spent several years helping care for my elderly Aunt.
I did all of this while working with clients ranging from small businesses to pro athletes, nonprofits, corporations, and states.
The underlying theme has always been that the most important thing to me was building my business in a way that let me adapt to various life stages and the challenges that life throws at me. I only have one life and don’t want to live it by others’ rules.
Now my passion is helping others reach their own personal life goals through the flexibility of entrepreneurship, whether that’s building a business to sell or building a lifestyle business that lets you roll with the punches as I have.
I’ve never done a solo show but in this episode I’m sharing what I’ve learned during my journey to help you mold your own journey. I hope it helps you in some way!
